Alienor

The Charentais is a classic French melon type from the Poitou-Charentes region, known for its small size, smooth or lightly ribbed rind, and intensely fragrant orange flesh. Alienor is one of several commercially bred cultivars in this tradition, valued for consistent production and shipping quality.

Alienor was specifically bred for commercial production, meaning it was selected for uniform fruit size, reliable yield, and strong disease resistance in addition to flavor. These traits make it better suited to large-scale farming than traditional open-pollinated charentais varieties.

Alienor produces intensely aromatic orange flesh with the classic sweet, perfumed flavor associated with French charentais melons. The flesh is typically smooth and juicy, with a sugar content that can rival the best traditional varieties when grown in ideal conditions.

Alienor melons can be grown by home gardeners, though seeds may be harder to find than more common varieties since it is primarily sold as a commercial cultivar. Like other charentais types, it prefers warm weather, full sun, and well-drained soil, typically maturing around 75 to 85 days from transplant.
