Aljojuca maar

description Aljojuca maar Overview

Laguna de Aljojuca, also called the Aljojuca maar, is a maar crater lake in Puebla, Mexico. A maar forms when a volcanic explosion excavates a broad, usually low-rimmed crater, which can later fill with groundwater or rainwater; this origin distinguishes it from a cone built mainly by lava or ash. Aljojuca lies in the eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt on the Mesa Central and is known for the deep blue appearance of its water. The site is relevant to volcanic geology and lake studies.
