Alto Mayo Protected Forest

The forest is a critical refuge for the endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey. This rare primate is native to the cloud forests of the Peruvian Andes. The protected area helps defend its shrinking habitat from logging and agricultural expansion.

This conservation area is located in the San Martín region of northern Peru. It covers the Andean-Amazonian transition zone, bridging the mountains and the jungle. It sits in a crucial biological corridor in the upper Amazon basin.

The area primarily protects lush cloud forest and montane habitats. It spans an Andean-Amazonian transition zone covering more than 180,000 hectares. This environmental gradient supports a wide array of specialized flora and fauna.

The conservation area covers more than 180,000 hectares of northern Peru. It encompasses a mix of montane habitats and cloud forests. Conservation International has been heavily involved in protecting this large swath of land from deforestation.
