Amanita phalloides

description Amanita phalloides Overview

Amanita phalloides, known as the death cap, is a poisonous Amanita mushroom native to Europe and introduced in some other regions with suitable tree hosts. It forms a greenish, olive, or yellow-brown cap above white gills and a white stalk with a ring and cup-like volva, although color can vary. Its amatoxins are heat-stable and disrupt protein synthesis in liver cells, so symptoms may be delayed before severe liver injury, kidney complications, or death develop.
