Cortinarius rubellus

description Cortinarius rubellus Overview

Cortinarius rubellus, known as the deadly webcap, is a poisonous mushroom of coniferous and boreal forests in Europe and North America. It contains orellanine, a nephrotoxin that destroys kidney tissue; symptoms of renal failure often appear only days to weeks after ingestion, delaying diagnosis and treatment. It has been confused with edible species, notably in a 2004 case in Scotland in which the novelist Nicholas Evans and relatives required dialysis and kidney transplants after eating webcaps.
