description Cortinarius orellanus Overview

Cortinarius orellanus, commonly called the fool's webcap, is a poisonous mushroom in the genus Cortinarius and is native to parts of Europe. Its principal toxin is orellanine, a nephrotoxin that can damage the kidneys after ingestion. Poisoning is difficult to recognize because symptoms may be delayed for several days or weeks, and severe cases can lead to acute or permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation.
