Paxillus involutus, the brown roll-rim, is a common mushroom of the Northern Hemisphere that forms mycorrhizal associations with birch and other trees. It was long eaten in parts of Europe despite its bitter taste, but repeated consumption can trigger an immune reaction, known as Paxillus syndrome, that causes acute hemolysis and can be fatal. The German mycologist Julius Schäffer died of this reaction in 1938, after which the species was widely recognized as poisonous.
