Android Kikaider

description Android Kikaider Overview

Android Kikaider is a Japanese tokusatsu television series produced by Toei and first broadcast in 1972, based on Shotaro Ishinomori's manga. Its protagonist, Jiro, is an android created with an incomplete conscience circuit who transforms into Kikaider and battles robots controlled by the criminal organization DARK. The unfinished circuit leaves him vulnerable to Professor Gill's control device, making moral choice, imperfect artificial consciousness, and the conflict between programming and autonomy central to the story.

help Android Kikaider FAQ

Why is Kikaider's body split into red and blue halves?

The divided design visually represents Jiro's incomplete conscience circuit and his struggle between moral choice and programmed control. The asymmetry makes that inner conflict visible whenever he transforms into Kikaider.

Who is the main villain in Android Kikaider?

Professor Gill commands the organization DARK and uses his flute to control its robots. Hakaider becomes Kikaider's most famous individual opponent.

Does Android Kikaider have a direct television sequel?

Yes. Kikaider 01 followed in 1973 and centers on another android hero, Ichiro, while continuing characters and conflicts from the original series.

Is the 1972 Android Kikaider series the same as the anime?

No. The original is a live-action Toei tokusatsu series based on Shotaro Ishinomori's manga, while Android Kikaider: The Animation is a later animated adaptation released around 2000.
