Anegada Lagoon

description Anegada Lagoon Overview

Anegada Lagoon is a large shallow lagoon on the western side of Anegada, the northernmost and only coral limestone island in the British Virgin Islands. Anegada is ringed by Horseshoe Reef, one of the largest barrier reefs in the Caribbean, which shelters the lagoon and surrounding waters. The lagoon and adjacent salt ponds support populations of flamingos and other seabirds, while the surrounding waters are used for fishing and tourism. The island's low elevation and remote character distinguish it from the volcanic British Virgin Islands.

help Anegada Lagoon FAQ

Why is Anegada so different from the other British Virgin Islands?

Anegada is a low, flat island formed mainly from coral limestone, while most other major British Virgin Islands are volcanic and hilly. Much of the island rises only slightly above sea level.

What reef surrounds Anegada Lagoon?

Horseshoe Reef extends around Anegada and is one of the Caribbean's largest barrier-reef systems. Its shallow coral heads have also contributed to numerous historic shipwrecks.

What animals live around Anegada Lagoon?

The lagoon and salt ponds provide habitat for flamingos, shorebirds, fish and juvenile marine life. Anegada is also associated with the critically endangered Anegada rock iguana.

Can boats freely cross Anegada Lagoon and Horseshoe Reef?

Navigation requires care because shallow water, reefs and shifting conditions create serious hazards. Visiting sailors generally use charted approaches and local guidance rather than attempting unmarked passages.
