Arctinurus

description Arctinurus Overview

Arctinurus is an extinct genus of large trilobites that lived during the Silurian period, primarily discovered in the Rochester Shale deposits of New York State. The genus is easily recognized by its broad, heavy exoskeleton and distinctive stellate, or star-like, outline when viewed from above. Paleontologists frequently recover Arctinurus as complete, fully articulated specimens, which is relatively rare for trilobites of this size. Their well-preserved fossils provide valuable insights into the marine ecosystems of ancient Laurentia.

help Arctinurus FAQ

Why does Arctinurus have such a star-shaped outline?

Arctinurus boltoni has broad, pointed extensions on its head and body segments that create its distinctive stellate outline. Its exceptionally wide exoskeleton makes it easy to distinguish from more streamlined Silurian trilobites such as Dalmanites.

Where are complete Arctinurus fossils usually found?

Famous articulated specimens come from the Silurian Rochester Shale of western New York, especially around the Niagara region. The fine-grained limestone and shale occasionally preserved the entire exoskeleton instead of scattered molts.

How large could Arctinurus grow?

Arctinurus was a notably large trilobite and could reach roughly 20 centimeters in length. Its broad body made a complete specimen appear even larger than many trilobites of comparable length.

Are complete Arctinurus fossils rare?

Complete articulated examples are much less common than isolated pieces, particularly loose cheeks and body segments. Many museum-quality specimens therefore come from carefully split Rochester Shale blocks that preserve both the fossil and its counterpart.
