help Arras Belfry FAQ

Was the Arras Belfry destroyed during the First World War?

Yes, German shelling severely damaged the town hall and belfry in 1914, and the weakened tower was subsequently brought down. Arras reconstructed the complex after the war in a form closely based on its historic appearance.

Can visitors go to the top of the Arras Belfry?

The belfry normally offers public access to an elevated viewing level, reached largely by lift with a final section of steps. From the top, visitors can look across the Place des Héros, the Grand'Place, and the surrounding city.

Why is the Arras Belfry a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

It is one of the Belfries of Belgium and France collectively inscribed by UNESCO. These civic towers represent the independence, prosperity, and municipal authority of medieval and early modern towns.

What architectural style is the Arras Belfry?

The tower and adjoining town hall are associated with the Flamboyant Gothic tradition, recognizable in their elaborate vertical stonework. Their postwar reconstruction revived that historic design rather than replacing it with a modernist structure.
