Atik Valide Mosque

The Atik Valide Mosque was commissioned by Nurbanu Sultan, the influential wife of Sultan Selim II and mother of Murad III. Built in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, it was one of the most significant imperial projects of the late 16th century. The complex included a madrasa, hospital, and bathhouse to serve the local population.

The construction of the imperial complex was completed in the year 1583, just before Nurbanu Sultan's death. This timing allowed the powerful Valide Sultan (Queen Mother) to see her grand endowment finished. It stands as an architectural testament to the power of women in the Ottoman imperial harem.

The brilliant chief architect Mimar Sinan designed the Atik Valide Mosque during the height of the classical Ottoman architectural period. Sinan designed it with a distinctive semi-domed layout, featuring a large central dome supported by half-domes. It is considered one of his finest mature works in the city.

The mosque is a masterpiece of classical Ottoman architecture, heavily utilizing the centralized dome plan that Sinan perfected. It features elegant, slender minarets, spacious courtyards, and exquisite Iznik tile work decorating the interior walls. The design reflects a harmonious blend of function and spiritual majesty.
