description Atlantic White-sided Dolphin Overview

The Atlantic white-sided dolphin, Lagenorhynchus acutus, is a robust oceanic dolphin of the colder waters of the North Atlantic. NOAA places its range roughly between 38 and 80 degrees north. Its dark gray cape, lighter gray sides, white underside, short beak, and tall curved dorsal fin are accompanied by a bold white patch below a yellow-tan streak on the flank, the pattern that gives the species its common name. It is monitored through marine-mammal surveys, including work on the western North Atlantic stock.
