Azerbaijan is a country in the South Caucasus bordered by Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Iran, with a coastline on the Caspian Sea. Baku, the capital, sits on the Absheron Peninsula, and Caspian oil and gas have long anchored the national economy. Terrain rises from coastal lowlands to the Greater Caucasus range, and the country has an unusually large concentration of mud volcanoes. A former Soviet republic, it regained independence in 1991.
