Bahia Magdalena

Bahia Magdalena is a large, shallow lagoon system situated on the western coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico. It opens directly into the Pacific Ocean and is largely protected from the open sea by a long barrier beach.

The bay's warm, calm waters provide a critical wintering, breeding, and calving ground for the eastern Pacific gray whale. Every winter, thousands of tourists visit the nearby town of Guerrero Negro to observe these magnificent animals up close.

The whales in this specific bay are notoriously 'friendly,' frequently swimming up to small tourist pangas to be petted by humans. While federal regulations require boats to keep their distance, the whales themselves often initiate the physical contact.

The nutrient-rich ecosystem supports extensive commercial and sport fishing, with species like halibut, sea bass, and yellowtail being highly prized. The bay is also the center of a historic, ongoing fishing industry for Pacific sardines.
