Bathory

Bathory was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1983 by Thomas 'Quorthon' Forsberg, who served as the band's sole consistent member, vocalist, and primary songwriter throughout its entire history. The band took its name from the infamous Hungarian noblewoman Elizabeth Báthory, but the band members themselves were Swedish.

Bathory's most influential releases include their self-titled debut 'Bathory' (1984), 'Under the Sign of the Black Mark' (1987), and 'Blood Fire Death' (1988), which defined the early black metal sound. Later albums such as 'Hammerheart' (1990) and 'Twilight of the Gods' (1991) pioneered the Viking metal subgenre with their epic, Norse mythology-inspired compositions.

Quorthon (Thomas Forsberg) died on June 3, 2004, from heart failure at the age of 38. His death effectively ended Bathory, as he had been the sole driving force and only consistent member of the band since its inception.

Along with Venom and Mercyful Fate, Bathory is widely credited as a founding pioneer of black metal, with the band's early albums establishing the genre's signature raw production, shrieked vocals, and dark, anti-religious atmosphere. Their later pivot to Norse mythology and epic song structures on albums like 'Hammerheart' created the template for what became known as Viking metal, influencing countless Scandinavian bands including Enslaved, Bathory, and Amon Amarth.
