Bebe Pagoda

The Bebe Pagoda is a small brick temple located within the Sri Ksetra archaeological site in Myanmar. Sri Ksetra was an ancient city of the Pyu people. It is a vital part of Southeast Asian architectural history.

It is notable for being an early model of the hollow "gu" style temple. This architectural design was later heavily developed and expanded upon during the Bagan period. The Pyu architecture directly influenced later Burmese temple construction.

The interior of the pagoda features early examples of Buddhist iconography and stucco reliefs. These artifacts provide crucial insight into the transition of Pyu religious art into later Burmese styles. Some structural elements mirror designs found in eastern India.

The temple dates back to the Pyu period, which flourished in the first millennium CE. It represents some of the earliest monumental brick architecture in Southeast Asia. Exact construction dates are difficult to pinpoint, but it predates the Bagan kingdom.
