description Benue Trough Overview
The Benue Trough is a major geological rift basin in Nigeria that follows much of the Benue River valley. It formed during the Cretaceous as tectonic forces affected the African part of Gondwana during the opening of the South Atlantic and the separation of Africa from South America. The trough contains thick sedimentary sequences and is commonly divided into northern, central, and southern sectors. It is important to African geology because its rocks record Mesozoic and later basin development in West Africa.
