Bombus robustus

Bombus robustus is a species of bumblebee native to the Andean regions of South America. It belongs to the genus Bombus, which includes the familiar fuzzy, social bees.

This Andean bumblebee has been recorded in high-altitude environments ranging from Colombia and Venezuela south down to Ecuador. Notably, it can be found in the Pichincha highlands of the Andes mountains.

The species was officially described by the prominent entomologist Frederick Smith in the 19th century. Smith's extensive work on Hymenoptera laid the groundwork for understanding global bee diversity.

Like other high-altitude bumblebees, Bombus robustus is a vital pollinator for native flora in Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Its ability to tolerate cold Andean mountain environments makes it crucial for local plant reproduction.
