The Boxer Rebellion was an anti-foreign, anti-Christian, and anti-imperialist uprising in northern China from 1899 to 1901, led by members of the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists, known in English as the Boxers. Violence targeted foreign nationals, missionaries, and Chinese Christians, while parts of the Qing government eventually supported or cooperated with the movement. An Eight-Nation Alliance intervened militarily, and the defeated Qing court signed the Boxer Protocol in September 1901, accepting indemnities and other penalties.
