Rwandan Social Revolution

description Rwandan Social Revolution Overview

The Rwandan Social Revolution, also called the Hutu Revolution, was a period of political upheaval and ethnic violence that began in 1959 while Rwanda was under Belgian trusteeship. Hutu political movements challenged the Tutsi monarchy and the political order associated with it, leading to the monarchy's overthrow and the establishment of a republic before independence on 1 July 1962. The violence also drove many Tutsi into exile and shaped Rwanda's First Republic.
