description Brazil Basin Overview

The Brazil Basin is a broad deep-ocean depression in the western South Atlantic Ocean, lying off the eastern coast of South America and west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Its seafloor contains abyssal plains and sediment-filled areas, and it is bordered or interrupted by major underwater rises and ridges, including the Rio Grande Rise farther south. The basin is a geographic unit used in marine geology and oceanography to describe the deep Atlantic floor and its sedimentary record.
