North American Basin

description North American Basin Overview

The North American Basin is a deep-ocean region of the western North Atlantic Ocean, extending between the North American continental margin to the west and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the east. Its floor includes broad abyssal plains, which are relatively level areas covered by sediment at great depth, along with other features shaped by ridges, rises, and deep-sea currents. Oceanographers use the basin's seafloor topography and sediment record to study the structure and history of the Atlantic Ocean.
