description Hatteras Abyssal Plain Overview
The Hatteras Abyssal Plain is a named abyssal plain on the floor of the western North Atlantic Ocean. It lies offshore from the continental margin of the southeastern United States, adjacent to the continental rise off North Carolina and Cape Hatteras. The plain is a deep, relatively flat seafloor region associated with sediment transported through submarine canyons and by deep-ocean currents. It is a geographic feature used in oceanographic and geologic studies.
