description Sohm Abyssal Plain Overview
The Sohm Abyssal Plain is a broad, sediment-covered region of the North Atlantic seafloor off eastern North America, near the Canadian Maritime provinces and New England. It is an abyssal plain, a relatively level deep-ocean surface formed by accumulated sediments, and is commonly described as covering about 900,000 square kilometres. The feature is named for Rudolf von Willemoes-Suhm, a German naturalist associated with the Challenger expedition.
