description Iberian Abyssal Plain Overview
The Iberian Abyssal Plain is a deep, relatively flat seafloor region of the Northeast Atlantic west of the northern Iberian Peninsula, including the margin west of Portugal and Galicia Bank. It lies at abyssal depths of about 5,000 metres and contains thick sediment sequences over oceanic crust. Ocean Drilling Program sites and seismic surveys have used the plain to study the transition between continental and oceanic crust and the opening of the North Atlantic.
