Brazilian Independence

description Brazilian Independence Overview

The independence of Brazil was formally declared on September 7, 1822, when Prince Pedro I proclaimed the country's separation from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. Unlike many other independence movements in the Americas, the transition was led by the Portuguese heir himself and successfully established a constitutional monarchy known as the Empire of Brazil. Although the broader process involved a three-year armed conflict against loyalist garrisons, the core political separation avoided massive continental warfare.
