Uruguayan Independence

description Uruguayan Independence Overview

Uruguayan independence emerged from conflicts over the Banda Oriental, a territory contested by Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata. The Thirty-Three Orientals launched an uprising against Brazilian rule in 1825, helping trigger the Cisplatine War. British mediation produced the 1828 Preliminary Peace Convention, under which Brazil and the United Provinces recognized an independent Uruguayan state.
