description Paraguayan Independence Overview
Paraguay's independence from Spain was declared on May 14, 1811, following a largely bloodless revolution led by local creole elites. The movement gained momentum after Spanish forces were defeated by local militia earlier that year. The revolution established a governing junta initially led by Fulgencio Yegros and José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia. Unlike many other South American independence movements, Paraguay's transition was relatively peaceful.
Following independence, Francia became the country's supreme dictator, implementing policies of strict isolation from neighboring countries.
