description British Rail Class 58 Overview
Introduced in 1983, the British Rail Class 58 is a Co-Co diesel-electric freight locomotive built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Doncaster Works. It features a modular design with narrow driving cabs located at each end, which allows for easier equipment access and maintenance. A total of 50 units were constructed for British Rail primarily for heavy freight operations. The fleet was withdrawn from mainline service by 2002, and several locomotives were subsequently exported to work in Spain.
