Launched in 1959, the EMD GP18 is an American four-axle B-B diesel-electric locomotive that succeeded the GP9. Manufactured by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division, it is powered by a 16-cylinder 567D1 prime mover producing 1,800 horsepower. The model was designed for general freight and yard switching duties, utilizing a versatile hood unit design that offered excellent visibility for train crews. Over 350 units were ultimately built for railroads across the United States before production ended in 1963.
