description Cabbage moth Overview
Cabbage moth, Mamestra brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758), is a noctuid moth whose caterpillars feed on cabbage and many other cultivated plants. It is associated with Brassica crops including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and related vegetables, but recorded hosts also include crops such as lettuce, peas, potatoes and beets. Young larvae damage leaves, while older larvae may enter cabbage heads and contaminate or weaken them. The species is therefore relevant to growers and plant-health workers managing brassica pests.
