description Cactus moth Overview
The cactus moth, Cactoblastis cactorum, is a South American moth in the family Pyralidae whose caterpillars feed inside prickly pear and other Opuntia cacti. It was introduced into Australia in the 1920s as a biological control agent against invasive prickly pear, where it contributed to the reduction of large cactus infestations. The species later became invasive in parts of the Caribbean and the southern United States.
