Lesser wax moth

description Lesser wax moth Overview

The lesser wax moth, Achroia grisella, is a small moth of the family Pyralidae found in association with honey bee colonies across warm regions of the world. Its larvae feed on beeswax, pollen, and other debris, tunnelling through and damaging the comb; they chiefly attack weakened colonies and stored combs, making the species a secondary pest of apiaries. Smaller than its relative the greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella), it is also known for the ultrasonic courtship calls males produce with tymbal organs to attract mates.
