description Diamondback moth Overview
The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, is a small moth of the family Plutellidae and among the most destructive agricultural pests of cruciferous crops such as cabbage, broccoli, and canola, occurring wherever these plants are grown. Its common name comes from the cream-colored diamond markings formed along its back when the wings are folded. Highly migratory and often carried long distances on winds, it is notorious for rapidly evolving insecticide resistance and was the first insect documented to develop resistance to DDT.
