Wax moth

description Wax moth Overview

Galleria mellonella, the greater wax moth, is a moth of the family Pyralidae whose larvae, known as waxworms, feed on beeswax and honeycomb inside honey bee colonies, destroying comb in weakened hives and stored frames and making the species a significant apicultural pest worldwide. The larvae are widely reared as live food for insectivorous pets and laboratory animals, and the species has become a model organism in studies of infection and immunity. Research published in 2017 reported that its larvae can degrade polyethylene plastic, drawing further scientific attention.
