Campo Limpo

A campo limpo is a specific type of savanna formation found within the Brazilian Cerrado biome. It is characterized by being predominantly herbaceous, meaning it is covered mostly in grasses and non-woody plants. It is visually defined by a distinct lack of trees and only a very sparse presence of shrubs.

The campo limpo is typically found in areas with wet or shallow soils that are not conducive to deep-rooted plant growth. These soil conditions prevent larger trees from establishing themselves, allowing grasses to dominate the landscape. It often occurs in areas with high water tables or near shallow watercourses.

While the broader Cerrado is known as a wooded savanna with scattered trees, the campo limpo specifically lacks any arboreal canopy. Other formations, like the cerrado stricto sensu, feature twisted trees and thicker shrubs, whereas the campo limpo is entirely open grassland. This gives it an appearance similar to a traditional prairie or meadow.

The campo limpo provides a crucial habitat for a variety of ground-nesting birds, insects, and small mammals native to the Brazilian Cerrado. Species such as the maned wolf and the greater rhea often utilize these open grasslands for foraging and hunting. The dense grasses offer excellent camouflage for these specialized animals.
