Cabo Verde, or Cape Verde, is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 570 kilometers off the coast of Senegal. A former Portuguese colony that gained independence in 1975, it developed a distinctive Creole society reflected in its Kriolu language and musical forms such as the morna popularized by singer Cesária Évora. The active volcano Fogo is the highest point in the islands. Praia, on Santiago, is the capital.
