Cetiosaurus oxoniensis is a large herbivorous sauropod dinosaur from Middle Jurassic rocks in England, particularly the Oxford Clay and related deposits of Oxfordshire. Richard Owen named the genus Cetiosaurus in 1841, making it one of the earliest sauropod genera recognized by science, although the species C. oxoniensis was named later. More complete remains eventually showed that it was a terrestrial, long-necked dinosaur rather than an enormous marine reptile.
