Château Suduiraut

Château Suduiraut is world-renowned for producing Sauternes, which are intensely rich, sweet dessert wines. These wines are created through the meticulous process of utilizing 'noble rot' (Botrytis cinerea). This beneficial fungus dehydrates the grapes on the vine, concentrating the sugars and flavors to create a luscious, syrupy wine.

In the historic 1855 Classification of Bordeaux wines ordered by Napoleon III, Château Suduiraut was designated as a Premier Cru Supérieur (First Great Growth). It ranked just below the legendary Château d'Yquem, which was the only estate to receive the unique 'Premier Cru Supérieur Exceptionnel' status. This cemented Suduiraut's place as one of the finest Sauternes producers in history.

The sweet wine blend at Château Suduiraut is overwhelmingly dominated by Sémillon grapes. Sémillon is highly susceptible to the noble rot required to make Sauternes and provides the wine with its rich, waxy texture. It is typically blended with a smaller percentage of Sauvignon Blanc, which cuts through the sweetness with vital acidity and citrus aromas.

The historic estate is located within the Sauternes appellation, specifically in the commune of Preignac in Bordeaux, France. The vineyards are uniquely situated on gravelly, sandy soils near the confluence of the Garonne and Ciron rivers. This specific geographical setup is vital, as the cool waters of the Ciron meeting the warmer Garonne generate the morning mists necessary for noble rot.
