description Chilean Woodstar Overview
The Chilean Woodstar (Eulidia yarrellii) is a tiny hummingbird endemic to a very restricted area of far northern Chile, including the Azapa and Lluta valleys, and historically also occurred in extreme southern Peru. The male is distinguished by an iridescent violet-magenta throat patch, while the female has a white throat with buffy underparts. Its population has declined severely since the mid-20th century, giving it one of the most restricted ranges of any hummingbird. It is classified as Critically Endangered.
