Chorda filum is a brown alga commonly called bootlace weed or dead man's rope. It is native to temperate North Atlantic and North Pacific coastal waters, where it grows attached to the seabed in the subtidal zone. The species produces a long, flexible, unbranched and cord-like thallus that can reach several metres in length, with reports of lengths exceeding eight metres. It is relevant to studies of kelp-related brown algae and rocky-shore habitats.
