Chungkai War Cemetery

Chungkai War Cemetery is located in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, near the route of the infamous Thailand-Burma Railway constructed during World War II. It is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is situated close to the River Kwai area.

Chungkai War Cemetery contains the graves of nearly 1,750 Commonwealth and Dutch prisoners of war who died during the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway under Japanese occupation during World War II. The prisoners were held in camps along the railway route, where disease, malnutrition, and brutal labor conditions claimed thousands of lives.

The Thailand-Burma Railway, also known as the 'Death Railway,' was constructed during World War II by Allied prisoners of war and conscripted Asian laborers under Japanese imperial forces. It was built to supply Japanese military operations in Burma by rail, and approximately 12,000 Allied prisoners died during its construction.

Chungkai War Cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), the intergovernmental organization responsible for commemorating Commonwealth war dead worldwide. The CWGC ensures that the cemetery's grounds, headstones, and records are preserved to the same standards applied to all Commonwealth war cemeteries.
