Grand Palace

The Grand Palace is situated in the heart of Bangkok, right on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. It is bordered by Sanam Luang square to the north and is a central landmark in the old city.

The complex houses Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It contains the highly revered, small jade statue of the Emerald Buddha that dates back to the 15th century.

Construction of the massive complex began in 1782 after King Rama I decided to move the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok. The palace served as the official residence of the Thai Kings for 150 years.

Because the complex contains sacred temples, visitors must adhere to a strict dress code covering shoulders and knees. Shorts, sleeveless shirts, and torn pants are strictly prohibited at the entrance gates.
