The Compton Tortoiseshell, Nymphalis vaualbum, also called Nymphalis l-album or the false comma, is a woodland butterfly of the family Nymphalidae found in parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. The upperwings are orange-brown with dark patches, while the ragged-edged underside is mottled gray-brown and can show a white V, L, C, or J-shaped mark. Adults overwinter in tree cavities or under bark, and caterpillars feed on poplar, willow, and birch.
