description Coprinopsis atramentaria Overview
Coprinopsis atramentaria, formerly placed in Coprinus and commonly called the common or alcohol ink cap, is a widespread saprotrophic fungus that often fruits in dense clusters on decaying wood or buried woody material. Its gray to brown, radially lined cap opens and then dissolves into a black, ink-like fluid as the gills mature. The mushroom contains coprine, which can cause flushing, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and other disulfiram-like reactions when alcohol is consumed, so it must not be combined with alcoholic drinks.
