description Cristfried Ganander Overview
Cristfried Ganander was a Finnish priest, compiler, and lexicographer who lived from 1741 to 1790. His principal lexicographical work, Nytt Finskt Lexicon, is described as the first etymological Finnish dictionary and contains more than 30,000 headwords with Swedish and Latin explanations. Completed in the eighteenth century but not published during his lifetime, it preserved information drawn from written sources, folk poetry, and traditional Finnish expressions.
