Cwm Llydaw

You can reach Cwm Llydaw by taking the popular Miners' Track, which begins at the Pen-y-Pass car park in Snowdonia, Wales. The trail is well-marked and relatively flat for the first few miles before ascending steeply toward the glacial lake. It is one of the most heavily trafficked routes up Mount Snowdon due to its stunning historical and geological features.

While technically possible, swimming in Llyn Llydaw is strongly discouraged due to its freezing temperatures, unpredictable depth, and lack of safe exit points along the steep, rocky shores. The lake is a vital source of drinking water and is piped directly to a nearby hydroelectric power station. Most visitors prefer to admire the striking dark waters from the safety of the surrounding Miners' Track.

Cwm Llydaw is a textbook example of a glacial cirque, a massive bowl-shaped valley carved out by ancient ice erosion during the last ice age. The back wall of the cwm drops steeply down from the jagged summit of Snowdon, showcasing layers of ancient volcanic rock. As the glacier retreated, it left behind a moraine that dammed the valley, creating the deep lake known as Llyn Llydaw.

Cwm Llydaw is situated on the southeastern slopes of Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) within Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) in North Wales. The region is steeped in Welsh mining history, with old copper mine ruins visible along the path to the lake. It is one of the most iconic and photographed landscapes within the entire Welsh highlands.
