Punkaharju

Punkaharju is a long ridge-like esker formation in Finland, famous as a scenic ridge landscape near Lake Saimaa. It lies in the Savonlinna area and is one of Finland's most recognizable glacial landforms. The area is often associated with sweeping views over nearby water and forest.

It is a classic esker shaped by meltwater channels under and at the edge of ice during the last glacial periods. Sand and gravel were laid down in long ridges that remained after the ice melted. That process gives it the narrow, elevated profile seen today.

The ridge is widely recognized as a national landscape and a major nature landmark in Finland. Its protection status reflects both ecological value and 19th- and 20th-century recognition of it as a national scenic symbol. It is also tied to Finnish tourism and nature education.

Visitors usually come for the dramatic viewpoints over adjacent lakes and old pine forests rather than only for hiking. It is associated with romanticized Finnish nature imagery and is commonly featured in travel guides for its dramatic silhouette near water. The views are strongest in the summer and early autumn.
