Cyprus

description Cyprus Overview

Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, situated south of Turkey and west of Syria and Lebanon, with Greek and Turkish as its official languages. The Republic of Cyprus, a member of the European Union since 2004, controls the southern portion of the island, while the north has been administered since 1974 by a self-declared Turkish Cypriot state recognized only by Turkey, with a United Nations buffer zone between them. Nicosia, the capital, remains divided. The island also retains two British sovereign base areas.

help Cyprus FAQ

Is Cyprus still a divided island?

Yes — the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus, an EU member since 2004, controls the south, while the north is run by the Turkish-declared state recognised only by Turkey, established in 1983. A UN-patrolled Green Line separates them, though pedestrians can cross at designated checkpoints in Nicosia.

What currency is used in Cyprus?

The Republic of Cyprus adopted the euro in 2008, so the south uses euros. In the north, the Turkish lira is standard, and you may notice different pricing when crossing the Green Line.

When is the best time to visit Cyprus?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer warm, comfortable weather without the peak summer heat, which regularly tops 30°C inland and on the coast. Winters are mild but can be wet, especially in the Troodos Mountains.

What is Paphos known for?

Paphos is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Roman mosaic floors and the Tombs of the Kings necropolis. Nearby Petra tou Romiou, or Aphrodite's Rock, is traditionally identified as the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite.
